Dementia Support and Advice
The Dementia Advice team offer a range of support options including a drop-in service, private appointments and support groups.
Our Dementia Advisors are trained, experienced professionals and are knowledgeable about all aspects of dementia including the types and symptoms, health services in Jersey, Social Security benefits, the Long Term Care Scheme, Powers of Attorney, capacity and much more. The Dementia Advisors can provide you with useful information, help you understand the condition better and offer suggestions for how to support or care for someone with dementia. We can also signpost you to other sources of help or support.
The Duty Dementia Advisor will usually be available for a brief chat in our offices, can arrange to see you privately, and will welcome you to our support groups.
Drop-in Service
Our Dementia Advisors are usually able to see people for a brief chat without an appointment at our offices in Hilgrove Street, St Helier during office opening hours which are 10.00 – 14.00 Monday to Friday. However, as they may be detained in meetings with other people it might be necessary for you to make an appointment for another time. A member of our team will always be available during these times to provide information leaflets on most subjects related to dementia and about the services we provide.
Our drop-in service is available for both people with dementia and their family and friends.
Private Appointments
Sometimes it is a bit easier to talk privately and at greater length, so our Dementia Advisors are happy to arrange private meetings with you to talk through any difficulties you may be experiencing. This may be for yourself if you have dementia, or if you are supporting or caring for someone else with dementia. You can attend these meetings by yourself, or with another person if this would be helpful for you.
These meetings can be arranged at our offices or online via Zoom. There is no charge for this service. To book please email info@dementia.je or Tel: 01534 723519
Counselling
We also provide a confidential counselling service which gives you the opportunity to talk with a trained professional who is there to listen and support you through difficult times, to help bring about effective changes and enhanced wellbeing.
You can see a counsellor for just one session, or an agreed number of sessions, which usually last about an hour and you can come by yourself, or couples and families can attend together.
In counselling a person is always in control of what they talk about and will never be asked to talk about things they do not want to discuss. It is often about making some changes or moving forward, with the counsellor helping you find new ways to feel stronger for the future. It is also sometimes about paying attention to what has happened in the past.
This service is available for people with dementia and the family or friends supporting or caring for someone with dementia. There is no charge for this service. To book please email info@dementia.je or Tel: 01534 723519
Our counselling service is temporarily unavailable. However, in the meantime, please do consider raising any issues you have with one of our Dementia Advisors as they might be able to offer you the support you need, and they will be able to recommend other sources of counselling help for you. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Support Groups
Because we know that some of the most valuable support we receive in life comes from others who have experienced life events similar to our own, Dementia Jersey offers different opportunities for people to meet for mutual support and encouragement and to share knowledge and experiences.
We have a choice of on-line Zoom, and in-person support groups available throughout each month. These are at various times and in different locations including daytime and evening meetings at comfortable locations including the Radisson hotel in town, Cooper’s coffee shop at Castle Quay, and the Green Goose café at Beaumont.
These are free, friendly, supportive groups, open to anyone supporting or caring for a relative or friend with dementia. They are informal opportunities to meet others over a cup of good coffee.
Our Dementia Advisor team attend these meetings and will be happy to chat with you too.
To arrange to speak with a Dementia Advisor privately or to find out more about our support groups, please Tel: 723519 or Email: info@dementia.je.
